NHS Sefton to look at three options for kids minor injuries unit in Southport

AN NHS report highlighted how a new health ‘hub’ in Southport will treat children with long term illnesses. The ‘hub’ to be opened on Hoghton Street in April will treat conditions like diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, complex needs and disabilities.

Dr Janet Atherton, Acting Chief Executive of NHS Sefton, said: “The hub is an exciting development that goes a long way to addresses the health priorities of children and young people in the area.”

Local GP, Dr Niall Leonard, added: “The hub is a much needed development.

It will benefit hundreds of children and young people every year and make it easier for services to work more closely together for the benefit of children and their families.”

Other key findings of the report included:

l Those attending A&E with minor illnesses would be best treated in primary care.

l The number of under 19s is projected to fall significantly over the next five years

l The number of children with complex needs is increasing.

NHS Sefton said the vast majority of respondents were happy with the health services they use but they want them to work together more effectively.

Acting Chief Executive of NHS Sefton, Dr Janet Atherton, added: “The report makes clear that our priorities need to be around improving services for children with long term conditions, disabilities and complex needs.

“As part of this work we have also been trying to identify options to improve services for the small number of children who travel to Ormskirk with minor injuries.

“The NHS Sefton Board will look at whether or not to consider the options further and will be taking account of the views of clinicians, people who use our services and other key stakeholders.”

The three options are:
  • l A Nurse-led minor injury service.
  • l A GP based minor injury service
  • l A minor injury nurse led service (in GP out of hours).

An independent clinical review ruled out a walk in centre for Southport because it would not be clinically safe or cost effective.
