NHS chief unveils new Liverpool diabetes centre

NHS Chief Executive Sir David Nicholson opens the new state-of-the-art diabetes centreChief Executive of the NHS Sir David Nicholson was on hand to officially opened a state-of-the-art diabetes centre at Liverpool's University Hospital Aintree. Sir David met with staff and patients during a special visit to the hospital before officially opening the £1.5 million Aintree Diabetes Centre on Friday.

The centre, which took its first patients at the start of the year, enabled the transfer of outpatient services from outdated accommodation at the former Walton Hospital.

Care Quality Commission Review shows inconsistencies in stroke services

The Care Quality Commission have published the findings of a major review of stroke services in England which show a lack of consistency across the country. The review has highlighted areas with considerable room for improvement as well as those where services are of a good quality.

PARENTS took to the streets to protest against cuts to children’s centres in Sefton.

The angry mums and dads walked from the Strand Shopping Centre to Bootle town hall, where they called to secure the future of vulnerable sites.

Spotlight on GPs as fight for Southport’s kids’ walk-in centre kicks on

THOUSANDS of postcards will be distributed to Southport homes demanding the return of kids’ health services to our town.

Campaigners are calling on residents to sign the postcards and send them to their GPs, who, from 2013, will have responsibility for commissioning local health services.The soon-to-be-abolished primary care trust NHS Sefton last year ditched a promised minor injuries unit for children, to be based at Southport hospital, over “clinical safety” fears.

Pregnant mother waited seven hours to be seen at Southport Hospital

SOUTHPORT Hospital has apologised after a pregnant mum waited seven hours to be seen by a doctor and health bosses warned it is facing severe pressure on beds due to the current flu outbreak.

Kerrie Anne Gilder sat in the Emergency Assessment Unit into the early hours of Thursday morning after being referred there by her GP.

Alcohol hospital admissions soar by 18%

Doctors dealt with an extra 1,000 patients needing treatment for alcohol illnesses and injuries in Sefton last year. The 18% rise in just 12 months meant 7,883 people went to hospital seeking treatment.

In Southport Hospital, 43 children also needed help because of excessive drinking.

Alder Hey faces new allegations of malpractice and bullying

LIVERPOOL’S world-renowned Alder Hey Children’s Hospital today defended its reputation amid allegations of failing to investigate alleged surgical malpractice, withholding information from patients and bullying among staff members.

The claims, published in the Independent on Sunday newspaper, prompted Chief Executive Louise Shepherd to write to parents and carers of patients.

£25m mental health hospital plan for North Liverpool

A BID to build a £25m mental health hospital on the site of the former Walton hospital is set to be approved by city planners.

The Merseycare bid will provide 85 in-patient beds for adults and the elderly, including patients with dementia and learning disabilities. The Trust said if it was granted permission it hoped to begin work this summer with a view to opening in 2013.

The Department of Health's Local Involvement Networks (LINks) Annual Reports 2009/10

The Department of Health's Commissioning, Analysis and Intelligence Team have published a report on the 2009-2010 LINks Annual Reports.

The report brings together information on resources, activity and outcomes from the Local Involvement Networks (LINks) annual reports of 2009/10, including comparisons to 2008/09. This report includes case studies highlighting activity of some LINks during 2009/10 and a quantification of the value of LINks

Healthy Communities Peer Mentoring

Brighter Living will be running our next Healthy Communities Peer Mentoring course in a couple of weeks’ time.

The course enables community members, staff, service users and volunteers to engage with those people looking for low level support in areas such as weight management, smoking cessation, drugs, alcohol, mental health, breast feeding, sexual health and men's health.

Liverpool PCT reveal proposal for new Kensington health centre

Kensington residents are being asked for their views on proposals for a state-of-the-art Neighbourhood Health Centre.

Liverpool Primary Care Trust (PCT) has unveiled plans for a new centre at the junction of Edge Lane, Durning Road and Holt Road, which would offer patients an enhanced range of health services. Existing local surgeries Kensington Park General Practice and Edge Hill Health Centre have expressed an interest in moving there.

Two more swine flu deaths as flu vaccine runs out across Merseyside

SEVERAL GP surgeries and chemists in Merseyside have run out of the flu vaccine, leaving “at-risk” patients unable to obtain the jab.

Last night, health chiefs urged people with underlying health conditions to still come forward, and added vaccines would be dispatched to where they were needed.

Pick up your bus pass closer to home

Merseytravel is closing the ticket unit at its head office in Hatton Garden from Monday 20 December and transferring its services to travel centres across Merseyside.

Travel passes for older people and people who have certain disabilities are now available from all seven Merseytravel centres across Merseyside at Liverpool ONE, Birkenhead, Southport, Bootle, St Helens, Huyton and Liverpool Queen Square. You can also apply at any post office in Merseyside.

Each year during Adult Learners Week, NIACE present Adult Learner Awards to outstanding individuals that have overcome personal barriers to take part in learning, and to organisations and projects that have had a huge impact on adults accessing learning. Winners are awarded both nationally and regionally (with the North West ceremony taking place in Manchester). last year 3 of the National winners were from Merseyside.

Liverpool GP outlines positive aspects of NHS White Paper


DR ROB BARNETT thinks there are also positives within the White Paper.
He said the proposals are only at early stages, and added only parts of the White Paper might become reality in any future Health Bill. He said: “It is clear they want to see clinicians and GPs at the forefront of commissioning. To my mind, that makes sense.

Liverpool health experts warn NHS White Paper could privatise health service


LIVERPOOL’S NHS could be slowly privatised if proposals from the Government’s health White Paper go through, health experts warned last night.
The concerns come after the British Medical Association (BMA) chairman Dr Hamish Meldrum warned about an “unnecessarily ambitious programme of reform” in his New Year message.

Liverpool heart and chest hospital will no longer admit patients from North Wales

A MERSEYSIDE hospital has said it will no longer admit patients from North Wales.

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, in Broadgreen, has banned patients from the region unless their condition is urgent because of a funding shortfall.

Sefton’s NHS volunteers praised at Christmas event

NHS Sefton held a Christmas party to honour the many local people who carry out voluntary work for the organisation.

The celebration was to say a special thanks to Sefton volunteers for all their hard work and commitment and for giving their time and expertise to help others.

The event was organised by the Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) team.

Free six-week weight management courses will be launched throughout the borough this month, highlighting the importance of being a healthy weight and setting realistic and managable goals.

Bed blocking keeps Merseyside patient in hospital for six years unnecessasrily

THE ECHO can today reveal one of the region’s worst-ever cases of bed-blocking – a patient who has spent more than six years in hospital unnecessarily.

The patient, whose identity has not been revealed, is under the care of the mental health NHS trust covering Knowsley, St Helens, Halton and Warrington, called the Five Boroughs Partnership.A Freedom of Information request by the ECHO revealed the patient has spent 2,398 days on a ward unnecessarily.
