Campaign to End Loneliness

The Campaign to End Loneliness helps people to maintain and create personal connections in their later life. They draw on research and inspiration from across the country to offer information and ideas to both individuals and those working with older people. They deliver projects and campaigns with a range of other organisations and aim to end loneliness in older age.

Loneliness is a bigger problem than simply an emotional experience. Researchers rate loneliness as a higher health risk than lifelong smoking, with links between a lack of social interaction with the onset of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's; an illness which costs the NHS an estimated £20 billion a year. Loneliness has also been linked in medical research to heart disease and depression.

Sometimes those who feel lonely don’t like to talk about it and currently the health service does not recognise loneliness as a condition they can directly help. If, as a society, we all work to prevent it, the health benefits would be vast. Over the coming months the Campaign to End Loneliness aims to gather and share information about what works in ending loneliness and what more can be done.
