New procedure at Liverpool Women’s Hospital is bringing hope and joy

The festive lights have never looked brighter for Rachel Backhouse. This Christmas, after years of heartache, she has been given the best present ever – the gift of a baby daughter.

“There were times when I thought it would never happen and of course I can never forget my journey over the last few years,” says Rachel, who is 29 and from Runcorn.

“But Evie Mai is the future now and I can’t wait to share it with her.”

Rachel is one of a growing number of women who are coming to the Liverpool Women’s Hospital from all over the country for a treatment that gives them hope of having a baby when all else has failed.
The treatment, known as Transabdominal Cerclage (TAC), sees a ‘band of steel’ placed at the neck of the womb to prevent it opening.

It has a 95% success rate and is carried out in only a handful of centres across the UK with the Liverpool Women’s one of the leaders in the field.

“I’d never heard of the procedure yet it has made such a difference to our lives,” says Rachel, cradling little Evie who was born on December 9.
