Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust cuts 125 jobs

Up to 125 jobs are set to be cut at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust, managers have revealed. The trust said the measure was needed to save £8.5m in the next financial year - 5% of its budget - and avert "more radical proposals".

Other cost-cutting measures include a recruitment freeze and reviewing the trust's structure and roles.

Managers have blamed government-imposed cuts, a reduction in treatment payments and changes to NHS financing.

Jonathan Parry, chief executive, said the trust faced a "very challenging financial situation" in 2011-12.

"To avoid more radical proposals, we are considering all options to reduce costs and increase efficiencies.

"For some time we have frozen vacancies, where appropriate, and not filled posts which have become vacant. We have now decided to canvass interest among staff in voluntary redundancy."

Each application will be assessed in terms of value for money and its potential impact on patient care.

All 3,000 staff are also being offered the chance to reduce their hours, job share or buy additional leave.

Consultation has begun with unions over the planned job losses.
