Liverpool heart and chest hospital will no longer admit patients from North Wales

A MERSEYSIDE hospital has said it will no longer admit patients from North Wales.

Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, in Broadgreen, has banned patients from the region unless their condition is urgent because of a funding shortfall.

It will affect people waiting for heart bypass and cardiac valve surgery and letters have already been sent to GPs.

The hospital said the number of Welsh patients needing surgery has exceeded a financial contract.

The health board said it was “working closely” with the hospital to reach an solution.

The hospital is reported to have been carrying out 70 elective and 50 urgent operations a month.

A spokesman for the hospital said: “We make no distinction between geographic areas when delivering treatment.

“But to protect the provision of this care for all patients, we must maintain a strong financial footing, meaning that we cannot afford to subsidise any one group of patients.”
