Hospital teams triumph at Sefton awards ceremony

Staff at Fazakerley Hospital are celebrating after two teams came top in their categories at a recent awards ceremony. The medical emergency team won an award for ensuring patient safety, while the healthy bowel clinic topped the innovation section at the first annual Sefton Health and Social Care Awards on November 24.

The joint NHS and Sefton Council event, held at the Crosby lakeside adventure centre, saw nominations in five main categories, which also included improving patient experience, clinical effectiveness and sustained achievement.

Jill Byrne, director of nursing for Aintree’s NHS foundation trust, said: “The medical emergency team and the bowel clinic team thoroughly deserve their success. Their dedication and commitment to quality has brought real benefits to our patients, and we're very proud to see their achievements recognised in these awards.”

More than 120 people attended the event, which was judged by a panel made up of a member from Sefton’s local involvement network, Sefton PCT’s executive nurse, a representative from sponsors Hill Dickinson solicitors, an NHS Sefton non executive director and a representative from Sefton Council.

Broadcaster, writer and award winning speaker, Roy Lilley, was the evening’s keynote speaker and presenter, while Kathy Parker represented the Royal College of nursing at the event.

Charlie Barker, strategic director for health and well being at Sefton Council, paid tribute to the hard work and dedication of hospital staff.

He said: “I was very proud to attend NHS Sefton’s quality awards.

“There are so many good examples of high quality of healthcare across the borough which we should all be proud of.

“The event has given me and others the opportunity to see the excellent work carried out by teams of talented and dedicated staff.”

And Fiona Clark, director of corporate performance and standards added: “The ceremony was all about celebrating the achievements of Sefton’s healthcare professionals.

“Local people should be proud – they are all award winners.”
