The service is a successful partnership between NHS Sefton and Asda supermarkets, which makes it easier for people to stop smoking at the same time they do their shopping. Stop and Shop is offering local residents the opportunity to join the nearly 2,000 local people who have already stopped smoking, since April last year.
Over the coming weeks, people who shop at Asda Southport and Bootle will be given free advice and help to stop smoking. This service makes it easier for any smoker in Sefton to access SUPPORT, the local NHS Sefton stop smoking service.
NHS Sefton Health Promotion Specialist Paula Bennett said: “In Sefton, we are proud that more and more people want to quit smoking. This is shown by our low smoking rate of 15% which is below the national average of 21%. Our rate is lower because of the number of people who want to stop smoking, but also the valuable free help and advice offered to assist them to quit by SUPPORT.”
Everyone who wants to quit can access SUPPORT, who will be near the pharmacies in the Asda stores during the initiative.
Sharon Gregory-Wareing, the community life champion at Asda Southport, said: “This is the second time Asda has welcomed NHS Sefton into our stores. We are very happy to help NHS Sefton and other organisations reach our customers. This is a particularly successful scheme and Asda is very much about being at the heart of the community and caring for our customers.”
