A preliminary application for a new housing development on Town Lane, Kew, was considered by councillors last night (Wednesday). If approved, the amount of new homes that could be built in Kew in the coming years would move above 800.
The application, currently in its early stages, would include:
- 99 two-storey houses.
- Two bungalows.
- A five-bedroom supported living house.
- A block of care apartments for young adults with learning difficulties.
A report that went before councillors last night stated: “The site has been used in the past as a tip and as such suffers from significant levels of contamination”
However, after investigations undertaken by the applicants, it is understood housing development on the site can be considered a possibility.
Plans to build 700 homes nearby are still being finalised, and the new proposal was greeted with cautious optimism.
Opposed to building on green belt land when other space, such as this, is available, Cllr Maureen Fearn said: “We need more houses and from the look of what the preliminary plans are, it looks fine. They are going to build the housing that is required.
“No decision has been made yet, it will be considered by the Planning Committee on all legal rules.
“If it’s allowed and the land is suitable then I can see no reason not to build as long as all the requirements are met.”
He said: “Generally speaking we do need affordable houses.
“My real problem is that in my particular ward there is going to be about 1,000 new houses and we have these problems with flooding...I had people who last year could not get their children into a school because they were full.”
Mr Weavers added: “Generally speaking I think we have got to be in favour – there’s about 7,000 people in Southport on the waiting list for housing.”
