Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital is one of only three NHS hospitals in the UK offering the minimally-invasive procedure which sees a tiny camera guide the surgeon inside the heart.
So far, the technique has been used to treat faulty heart valves, but there is scope for the equipment to be used for other operations.
Further on in the future, the hospital is hoping to add on to the kit they already have by investing in a robot which would see the surgeon operate robotic arms from a computer console.
In the meantime, the trust is trying to raise £400,000 to develop the service.
He wants to see the hospital become the first in the UK to offer robot-assisted minimally invasive heart surgery.
Mr Modi said: “I don’t see why patients on the NHS should be treated any different if that’s the standard in America. I don’t see why we can’t have it here in Liverpool.
“More importantly, the benefits to patients from keyhole surgery include reduced complication rates, reduced pain, reduced blood loss, and faster recovery and rehabilitation.
“We’re hoping we can be the only centre in the country to offer pioneering robotic minimally invasive surgery, transforming a three month rehabilitation period into three weeks or less.”
