Support is at hand for multiple sclerosis sufferers in Sefton. The area branch of the MS Society is setting up new drop-in centres in Formby, Southport and Crosby, which will offer sufferers the chance to meet others affected by the disease and take part in a special yoga class.
There will also be counselling and physiotherapy sessions, as well as a special chair exercise class. Sessions will be held on the first Thursday of every month at Portland Street Unitarian Church in Southport and Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, beginning on Thursday, October 7 and on the second Thursday of each month in Formby at the Harington Centre, beginning on Thursday, October 14.
Sefton committee member and MS sufferer Mo McDerby, 57, of Southport, said: “I have been a member of the society for about 12 months now and they have been absolutely fantastic.
“They have been a great support to both me and my husband.
“I had been ill for a long time and in a strange way it was a relief to finally get a diagnosis. I still have good mobility at the moment so I’m hoping that lasts as long as possible.”
The Sefton society has about 160 members in total, many of whom are MS sufferers.
But the group also boasts people who have family and friends who suffer from MS and those who just want to volunteer to help out with events.
As well as the drop-in centres, the society is planning an autumn fair which will be held on Saturday, October 9, at Lord Street West Church in Southport.
The event will run from 10am to 1pm and admission costs £1, including tea and biscuits.
There is also a fundraising book stall set up at Marble Place, Southport, every first Saturday of the month, from 9am until 3pm and the society’s Christmas party has already been arranged.
Members are invited to the Gild Hall in Formby on Friday, December 10 and newly-diagnosed sufferers are also being urged to contact the society and get involved.
