Chief Executive of the NHS Sir David Nicholson was on hand to officially opened a state-of-the-art diabetes centre at Liverpool's University Hospital Aintree. Sir David met with staff and patients during a special visit to the hospital before officially opening the £1.5 million Aintree Diabetes Centre on Friday.
The centre, which took its first patients at the start of the year, enabled the transfer of outpatient services from outdated accommodation at the former Walton Hospital.
The new centre offers modern surroundings for patients and a range of extra facilities, including rooms for training and educational work with patients.
Sir David said: “The Aintree Diabetes Centre is an excellent facility, and the investment by the Trust will help ensure that clinical staff can offer patients the best possible care. It is a very impressive centre and the staff and patients whom I met were delighted with it.”
In addition to officially opening the Aintree Diabetes Centre, Sir David saw progress on the hospital’s new £9 million radiology department and visited the regional Ventilation Inpatient Centre, where patients are “weaned” from ventilators.
His visit finished with an engagement session with staff in the hospital’s new £34 million Elective Care Centre.
James Birrell, Chief Executive of Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, said: “We have invested heavily in developments at University Hospital Aintree, which are creating the fit-for-purpose, modern facilities which patients expect.
“These facilities have helped us to transfer services from the former Walton Hospital, and will help staff to provide the highest-quality, safest care to patients. We were very pleased that Sir David was able to see some of them for himself.”
Dr Sue Benbow, Clinical Director for Diabetes, said: “These are modern facilities for a modern service, and they also provide excellent links between our clinical services and our University research colleagues. Podiatry is part of the service, so foot patients can be managed as a one-stop shop. It’s a real improvement for patients and staff, which will help us ensure a high quality service.”
